WSK PREMIUM SPECTRA Desired Characteristics:
Exceptionally low stretch: tightly woven braid structure to minimize stretch.
Small diameter, reduced weight: braided from 100% Spectra® fiber, made with finer denier fibers than other braided Spectra lines. The result is a small diameter kite line with up to a 30% weight reduction compared to other Spectra lines. The thin profile is more aerodynamically efficient, and the lighter weight yields better speed and reduced drag.
Reduced friction on wrapped lines, better wear: increased abrasion resistance, and lower the friction between wrapped lines.
High quality kite lines at affordable prices!

Please Note: WSK Premium Spectra is marketed and sold as Kite Line!
Although Spectra line has been used for many other applications
this product is not guaranteed for any such use other than for Kite Flying.

VERY IMPORTANT... Please fly safely!
Please visit our page on Kite Safety, and feel free to download and print a copy of our FREE "Kite Safety Field Card". Within the "Kite Safety Field Card" you will also find a section on "Line Safety".

Most people (fliers and spectators alike) do not realize that different types of flying lines are NOT capable with one another. Please pay particular attention when flying Sport Kites around single line kites. Make certain so that your flying line does not come in contact with single line kite lines (Dacron or even cotton line from inexpensive kid's kites). For more info on this please see the
"Kite Safety Field Card".

Laser Pro and es/55 verses the new WSK PREMIUM SPECTRA

For a time Laser Pro Gold was longer being produced for the kite industry. This line was a top rated line. I still have a few pre-made line sets in stock. Once I'm sold out of this stock, there will be no more. Hence I needed to find a replacement for Laser Pro Gold, and also for Blue Line (es/55), as Blue Line has become extremely expensive, and hard to get stock when I need stock.

The WSK Premium line is THE best line I have ever flown (in my opinion). I feel it is as good or better than both Laser Pro Gold and es/55 Blue Line. As for bulk spools, the WSK Premium Spectra is readily available on a wide range of factory spools, plus I do custom spooling for customers (minimum 300' of line per test).

In the Spectra 1000 range, I had always sold a lot of bulk line. But when LP Gold was being discontinued, and es/55 was hard to get a hold of, I had to find a good replacement. This is where the WSK Premium Spectra come in. With the WSK Premium line, it is unbelievably small in diameter for any given test and all sizes from the 80# test up to the 1000# test can be no-knot spliced, and you can even splice from size to size, starting with the 130# to the 200#, 200# test to the 300#, 300# to the 500#, 500# to the 800#, AND even the 800# to the 1000# test line!

As for what SPECTRA the WSK Premium Spectra is made with, it is a combination of Spectra 1000 and Spectra 2000. The finer (smaller test lines) are made with Spectra 2000, and the larger (higher test lines) are made with Spectra 1000. The type of Spectra is not what makes this line special though, it is the Denier of the fiber, and how the lines are actually braided... enabling the line to be smaller in diameter for any given test, while having a very tight braid, and still be able to feed the lines within themselves (to provide an extremely secure no-knot splice).

As of right now, I have very good pricing on the Laser Pro Gold line sets, but as I said, once I sell out of these, there will be no more.

If you want a replacement for the 90# LP Gold, in the way of a bulk spool, then I might suggest the 80# WSK Premium Spectra, or you can opt for the 130# WSK Premium Spectra.

Just to give you an idea... I fly mostly quad sport kites... Revolutions and Skydancers, and I never fly on anything less than 130# WSK Premium Spectra in normal winds (3 - 20+ MPH). Only for extremely light wind days do I fly on lighter and short line sets.

History and information about Spectra® fiber

In the mid 1980s, AlliedSignal Inc. (now Honeywell) introduced Spectra® fiber. An entirely new type of synthetic yarn, it was one of the first commercially available extended chain, high-modulus polyethylene fiber. Because Spectra® fiber is a polyethylene with a carbon-to-carbon molecular structure like that of a diamond it creates a continuous filament yarn with incredible performance and endurance. Pound-for-pound ten times stronger than steel yet light enough to float, Spectra® fiber is one of the world’s strongest and lightest manmade fibers. Spectra® fiber applications include cut protection, ropes and cordage, vehicular and personal armor, and fishing line, as well as various specialty applications.

Spectra® fiber is used in specialized sewing thread, tethers used in space by NASA and high-tech sailcloth composites for America’s Cup sailboats. It is a rip-stop reinforcement for luggage fabric, as well as a yarn used in parachute cords, kite line, dental floss, mammoth commercial fishing nets and dozens of other applications where the fiber's great strength, light weight and endurance are critical.

Spectra® fiber is one of the world’s strongest and lightest fibers. A bright white polyethylene, it is, pound-for-pound, ten times stronger than steel, more durable than polyester and has a specific strength that is 40 percent greater than aramid fiber.
Spectra® fiber is made from ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene that is used in a patented gel-spinning process. Polyethylene is a remarkably durable plastic, and scientists at Spectra Technologies have captured the tremendous natural strength in the molecular backbone of this everyday plastic to create one of the world’s strongest and lightest fibers. The gel-spinning process and subsequent drawing steps allow Spectra® fiber to have a much higher melting temperature than standard polyethylene.

With outstanding toughness and extraordinary visco-elactic properties, Spectra® fiber can withstand high-load strain-rate velocities. Light enough to float, it also exhibits high resistance to chemicals, water, and ultraviolet light. It has excellent vibration damping, flex fatigue and internal fiber-friction characteristics, and Spectra® fiber’s low dielectric constant makes it virtually transparent to radar.

Spectra® fiber is used in numerous high-performance applications, including police and military ballistic-resistant vests, helmets and armored vehicles, as well as sailcloth, fishing lines, marine cordage, lifting slings, and cut-resistant gloves and apparel. Honeywell also converts Spectra® fiber into the Spectra Shield® family of specialty composites for armor and other applications.

[Spectra Fiber 900]
Spectra® fiber 900 was the first commercially available extended-chain, high-strength polyethylene fiber and the first in a series of Spectra® fibers.

[Spectra Fiber 1000] High-strength, lightweight polyethylene fiber
Spectra® fiber 1000, the second in a series of Spectra® fibers, was developed to meet customers’ needs for increased performance. It is available in a multitude of deniers for use in a wide range of applications. This extended chain polyethylene fiber has one of the highest strength to weight ratios of any manmade fiber. Spectra® fiber 1000 has a tenacity 15 - 20 percent higher than that of Spectra® fiber 900. Spectra® fiber is, pound-for-pound, 10 times stronger than steel, more durable than polyester and has a specific strength that is 40 percent greater than aramid fiber. Specific performance is dependent upon denier and filament count.

[Spectra Fiber 2000] The ultimate high-strength, lightweight performer
The latest generation of Spectra® fiber was developed to provide super-fine, super-strong and ultra-lightweight fibers for armor, aerospace and high-performance sporting goods applications. Spectra® fiber 2000, Honeywell’s premier ballistic fiber, is stronger and lighter than most commercial high-modulus fiber and has one of the highest strength to weight ratios of any manmade fiber. Spectra® fiber’s high tenacity makes it pound-for-pound 10 times stronger than steel, more durable than polyester and gives it a specific strength that is 40 percent greater than aramid fiber. Specific performance is dependent upon denier and filament counts.

Spectra® fiber Product Characteristics:

Light enough to float (.097 Specific Gravity)

High resistance to chemicals, water, and UV light

Excellent vibration damping

Highly resistant to flex fatigue
Low coefficient of friction

Good resistance to abrasion

Low dielectric constant makes it virtually transparent to radar.
