Kite Flight, Safety First!!!!!!!!!! |
Note: Please feel free to Print these safety rules. You should use one letter size sheet of paper, or if you wish, card stock (letter size, but heavier 80# or 100# thickness). Place only one sheet in your printer. Your printer will print that sheet, then tell you that you are out of paper, at which time you re-insert the paper that printed the first page (only this time insert it in the paper tray, so that the blank side will be printed). Once printed, simply fold to form a tri-fold "Kite Safety Field Card". Then keep the field card with your kite gear at all times for your reference, and to share with others on the flying field. Call your local power company instead. Carbon spars used in most Sport kites are good conductors, and are very dangerous if caught in power lines. *LINE SAFETY: Always avoid crossing different types of flying line. That's right, you heard correctly, line safety is an issue that is very seldom mentioned, but is extremely important! A fact that all fliers should know, and many are not aware of, is that not all kite line is created equal! Most other lines can cut Spectra line, which is most commonly used for stunt kite flying. Although Spectra line uses very strong woven fibers, it has a very low melting point. Therefore the friction produced by any other type of line crossing Spectra will swiftly cause the line to be cut. Many single line fliers, and beginner Sport kite fliers (and even fliers with some experience) do not realize that cotton or Dacron line can be very hazardous to Spectra lines, the sport kites being flown, the flyers and spectators within the flying area. These lines used for single line, and some low-end sport kites can be the cause of major problems on the flying field. If a sport kite flying at high speed has one or all of its lines cut, that kite can go out of control, possibly causing injury or even death to anyone within it's path. |

Remember that the flier of each kite is responsible for the safety of everyone within the path of his or her kite. Note: These safety rules have been compiled using AKA rules, and input from various members of the Fly Pittsburgh Kite Club, OSEK, AKA and International fliers. All of the rules mentioned can be further expanded upon, and this "Field Card" should form a good foundation to help keep kiting safe. Each discipline of kite flying has it's own special skills needed and may have its own safety rules specific for that type. It is up to the individual flier to make sure that he or she learns all that is needed to keep it safe for everyone. We all want to have fun kiting, but we must never forget these safety rules! Many spectators, bystanders, and even some fliers are not aware of all the possible dangers of kite flying. It is up to all of us to raise safety awareness, not just to fliers, but to others as well. |
